Making Everyday Matter

For me, art isn't something to sell in a gallery or hang on the wall. It's a way of documenting the stories of my life and the beauty that surrounds me. Here are a few pages from the hundreds of illustrated journals I've filled over the years.

Look over my shoulder.  Here's a little film about how I make a drawing and let my breakfast get cold.

I love books more than anything. And I've published more than a dozen so far. I write them, illustrate them, and design them.

Most of them are about drawing and creativity. Three are memoirs. One's a novel for kids, another's about ham radio. And I've contributed to lots of others.

Coming soon! My next book is heading to the printer!

Shut Your Monkey: How to Control Your Inner Critic will be published by HOW this fall. It's about that pesky voice in your head that prevents you from expressing yourself creatively. It whispers in your ear and derails your career plans, sabotages your work before it's completed, makes you overreact and misbehave.

I'm here to help other people be creative.

I have no formal training as a teacher. No sheepskin. No letters after my name.

But I have spent the last couple of decades intensively tutoring one student: myself. I've taught myself to write, to draw, to think about all things creative. And to unburden myself of all the obstacles that get in the way of reaching my full creative potential.

Now I take all those lessons and I share them. I share them with kids around the world. With adults in workshops. And online in my very own skool...

Sketchbook Skool is a new idea in art education. Rather than just focussing on specific techniques, we aim to inspire artists of all levels to embrace and expand their creativity.

Each of our kourses features a different teacher each week, sharing with you how (and why) they make art. Each high-quality video is part of a virtual 'hangout', giving you access to their ideas and experiences, their studios and sketchbooks.  Our fakulty are artists, illustrators, architects, teachers, and designers from San Diego to Stockholm.

Sketchbook Skool is also a wonderful community. Over 10,000 people from around the world meet in our klassrooms and campus, to share their work and progress, to support and encourage each other, to discover or advance their creativity together. It's a life-changing experience.

Cross-fertilization. I like to turn workshops into communal experiences where we all share and learn from each other.

Pre-schoolers are all great artists and they inspire me so much!

Teachers love to learn too! Here I am working with a group of art teachers in a special after-school drawing club.

Artist-in-residency. What could be better than collaborating with students all over the world?

Fired up! There's nothing like re-inspiring a teenager to love art like she did when was little.

Art's not just for art class. Smart schools love to learn how they can incorporate illustrated journaling into the curriculum.

I enjoy talking to people who are looking for ways to expand their creativity or to heal themselves. My presentations are full of stories richly illustrated with hundreds of films and slides from my many sketchbooks.

I talk about:

  • how to develop creative habits

  • the power of personal storytelling

  • how to face life's challenge creatively

  • tackling obstacles to creativity

  • where ideas come from

  • how to take risks

... and more.
