Back for another go at life drawing. I un-retired my dip pen and was glad of it; it's so much more organic and expressive than the Rapidograph. I also decided to tackled the entire form and try to concentrate on values as much as accuracy.
Jack blew me away, as usual. He and his pastels muscled their way to a beautiful, surreal, Incredible Hulk sort of thing. Because he wanted to do something with the model's blank stare, he put her in an imaginary train and drew in the view. I think he still has plans to fill in the top part of the page.
On Saturday night, Jack rushed in with this lovely portrait of the hopefully-not-next-Vice-President-of-the-United-States, Sarah Palin. I see his future in Stalinist propaganda.

I assume YOU are a beauty of the highest order?

I have the feeling I'm coming into the middle of a conversation, but I'm really disappointed in your characterization of this artist's model as a "troll" and "not easy on the eyes." One of the things I really value about your writing is the lesson to look carefully enough to see the beauty in things, but your offhandedly cruel comments make it seem like you didn't look closely enough at this model to find what was beautiful about her. I hope she doesn't find this description, because if she does, I bet she'll never pose for drawing students again. You will have dealt another blow to the psyche of someone who deals with being judged on their appearance every second of every day, and you will deprive yourself and others the opportunity to consider a standard of beauty a bit different from Heidi Klum. Your post is not funny at all.

Jack intimidates me. His work just plain surprises me every time. Wow.
Love how you cross hatched the heck out of your portrait too. I have to try dip pen.

interestingly in danny's drawing of the model, it seems he did indeed see what was lovely about her, and i see a certain dignity in the depiction.

Hey Danny, the drawings are great and Jack´s work is amazing.
BTW: What is a dip pen?

Danny, I hate to pick on the fine points but Malamutes do NOT have pale eyes.
Malamutes have BROWN eyes, which vary from dark brown to a brown gold, but still a brown.
It is a disqualifying fault for Malamutes to have any other eye color.
Pale eyes are one of the norms on HUSKIES. (A breed I don't care for in the least because of they senseless hyperactivity compared to the sensible work ethic of the Malamute. Also pale/blue eyes are found on several of the herding breeds like border collies, Aussies, and Australian Cattle Dogs--to name just a few--all happy choices for film makers who want to have dogs with a SPOOKY look, generated by the blue/light eyes.)
Say what you want about models, but please get it right about the beautiful eyes of Malamutes!
(See no matter what you say . . . )
Loved the dip pen work and hope you keep doing more of that. I especially loved the hands and slacks!
Jack's work continues to amaze, or rather, since I'm expecting it now, to inspire.
I wonder if we could get Palin to do a sketch of Jack so they could place their sketches on The Portrait Party! I still wouldn't vote for her, but at least I might begin to believe she has an iota of a sense of humor.

Sarah Palin is "the devil"? A mother of five, a fisherwoman, a duly elected governor ... is ... the devil.
Subtle.
I used to enjoy coming to your site, Danny, for very apolitical inspiration.
Now you've shown your fangs twice -- and this is really beneath you.

Jack's likeness of Sarah Palin is almost as good as Tina Fey's...I could tell who it was even before I read it...I still kind of sometimes like her though.

what an incredibly CRUEL and DEGRADING thing to say about someone who was willing to pose for you. what if someone said
that about YOUR mother, wife, or child? that woman is
someone's child and maybe wife or mother. i pray that she
does not see your post. the next
time someone poses for you, why don't you just stab them in the back instead of posting
their picture with nasty comments about them???? i hope your son does not
grow up to be like you!

what a shame......you got a lot of class.

Wow. I think you should delete your original post, Danny. Those thoughts really don't deserve publication.

Jack, the Sara P. drawing is right on!!! Thanks for your clever satire. T

Trudie,
In what possible universe could that "drawing" be considered "clever satire"? It's the "artistic" equivalent of driving a Mack truck through a brick wall to make your point, whatever that point might have been. I'm sure I won't be missed, now that Danny has resorted to 'STFU' rage drawings, but I definitely won't be back. And it makes me incredibly sad to say that.
