The view from my bedroom balcony tonight reminds me of the loss of seven years ago. I remember waking up at 4 a.m. on the morning of 9/12/2001 and going out on the balcony with Patti. We watched the smoke rise from the pile, the air still heavy with that sweet electric smell of burning. Everything was so, so quiet, so unlike New York, even at 4 a.m. We weren't sure how to feel.

I can't imagine what it must've been like to be so near such a disaster Danny. This is a great photo though.

I remember I was into my second week of professional teaching and it was already a nerve-wracking month, starting as a rookie, and opening a brand new school with hardly any supplies yet. The music teacher down the hall dropped a class of second graders off to my art room and whispered to me what had happened. I thought she lost her mind, then our principal came by to say what had happened. A sudden sense of panic took over me within seconds, but I had to hold it together with the kids in my room. Parents left and right were picking up their children from the school and we had to make an announcement over the pa system, telling students that parents were coming to get them because of lawn work (I guess nobody could think of anything better to tell 'em). And just that morning, driving to work, it was a clear, gorgeous day - blue skies and all. I saw a low flying 747 on it's way to Dulles Airport and thought about how great it would be to fly/travel (I had somewhat of a fear of it) someday.

I was at Ground Zero last January and seeing the reconstruction and the new plans brought back memories while at the same time, gave me hope.
