Time for another in my series of podcast interviews with cool sketchbook keepers. Are you enjoying them?
I first encountered Kurt Hollomon's work when Dan Price sent me an outdoor gear catalog from Royal Robbins which Kurt had illustrated. It was the first time I had seen a commercial project that combined the sort of drawing and journaling and collaging stuff that Dan and I were into and it was very exciting.
We started to correspond with Kurt and soon received many letters filled with drawings and pastels and collages which were enormously inspiring and encouraging.
Now Kurt teaches at Pacific Northwest College of Art and is spawning all sorts of new sketchbookers while still pushing the envelope with his own work. He has a unique practice: he does a drawing, then goes back and layers on paintings, pastels, more drawings, text, typography, calligraphy, and collaged ephemera to build up the page into a beautiful pastiche. He is very devoted to journaling and documents his days more thoroughly than anyone else I know.
When I called up Kurt for a chat, we ended up talking for so long that I have had to split the conversation into two parts; the second will go up next weekend. I learned so much from him and I hope you will too.
I am very psyched to have Kurt's work in my upcoming book, An Illustrated Life: drawing inspiration from the private sketchbooks of artists, illustrators and designers due out in October from HOW books ( though you can pre-order it today).
The whole episode is 31 minutes long; it's perfect to listen to as you draw in your own journal.
As usual, I invite your comments (haven't had many so far) on whether this project is worthwhile and enjoyable. It take a lot of work to do and I would love to know whether and how you are listening to them.
Please stay tuned and consider subscribing via RSS or iTunes* to this weekly feature until the book comes out this Fall.

Next week's episode: More with Kurt D. Hollomon

Hi Danny, I hadn't had the time yet to listen to your interviews (student in visual arts, these previous weeks were very charged) but everytime i find someone who does jouraling with collage and drawings i get excited. But i have a problem since last october: i don't have passion and ideas anymore, i always have to force myself into it and there is not this freeing feeling i had before, i think it's winter..
Anyway, i'm glad to see your posts more often and i'm looking forward to see and read your next book!

I'm going to listen to this one just now -- but I'm loving the series. It's a wonderful idea. Hearing Kate's voice, especially, when I already know it on the page, was great. Please keep it up --- I look forward to the book, but this adds so much to what one can glean from the page. Thanks for it.

Danny,
Thanks for publishing the podcasts - I love listening. After several years of "reading" Kate, it was especially wonderful to hear her voice. I am disappointed however that I can't get the first one to play and I've tried several computers (work - ssshhhh! - and home). I just start getting interested at about minute 6 and it stops completely.
Have you cosidered including a DVD of all of the interviews with your book? Or making a DVD which can be purchased separately?

Danny,
I love your podcasts! I listen to them while I'm weaving. You are one very cool guy.

Danny, this was great exchange of ideas and your efforts are appreciated by all! I can't wait to read the book!
I especially enjoyed hearing about how Kurt's journal becomes his "gym...his workout station...his I-Pod...done by hand the slow way...a book fill with charm." You seemed to be able to really hit the mark in bringing to the surface the "soul" of what Kurt loves to do. Kurt's personal respect for his journals puts another bright focus on what we all love to do.
Thanks for bringing the expertise of some great imaginative minds right into our own homes. It encourages us all put a little 'mud into the soul" of our artwork.

I have been greatly enjoying the podcasts and eagerly awaiting the release of your book. As you mentioned, its perfect to listen to them while scribbling in your journal..

Hi Danny,
YES, YES! Here's one person who is enjoying your podcasts very much! I tried listening to them while doing something else, like doodling in my sketchbook, or, as you suggested, looking at the artist's website -- but found that I was missing bits, so now I do nothing more mind-engaging than folding laundry while listening! (and by the way, having something creative and stimulating to listen to sure makes a dull task much more pleasurable!)
I was glad to hear that after the first one you no longer cut off your own questions in midsentence -- that was a little annoying and I kept wanting to know what exactly YOU had said ...
Thanks for taking the time and the trouble to do these. More than ever I'm looking forward to your book!!

Hi, Danny!! I can't believe you haven't had many comments on your wonderful podcasts. I know that I am one of many listening to each and every one of them. I find them really interesting and inspiring, and my interest is piqued to explore each artist further. I looked up Kurt Holloman's website this morning, and I spent nearly an hour there, really studying the generous number of sketches, maps, illustrations, etc.
Each podcast makes me more anxious for your book (that's just a thinly veiled encouragement for you to keep doing them, but it IS true)!!! Thank you for your efforts putting these podcasts together!

Truly enjoyed the pod casts! I am a former graphic artist who has returned to painting full time. It took me years to fill one sketchbook until I read your books. Now I am sketching everyday and bind 90% of my sketchbooks. Thanks, Chris

I for one enjoy these podcasts immensely. Heck, I may even have to get myself some kind of iPod-thingy to listen while going to work. Thank you for posting them, I hope you keep it up. They are very inspirational, informative and entertaining.

Thank you for putting another interview up so that I can listen to it while I draw on this beautiful sunny Sunday morning. I'm loading them to my mobile phone so I can listen again while I'm out drawing. You are asking all the questions that I want to know the answers to.

Hi Danny, I listened by computer download to the Kurt Holloman interview, you can FEEL his energy & enthusiasm & it was very inspiring. (I must be the last person on earth without an ipod...sigh, don't like things in my ears...) Looking forward to the next installment, thanks for facilitating.

I am not computer proficient enough to be able to get the file to open and play! Help! Simple directions somewhere would be a help. Perhaps there are others like me who simply give up in silence. Love the written text and pictures though.....

Dear Sandi:
I wish I could help. Unfortunately the majority of people seem to have not had a problem. Have you installed Quicktime? You can get if free here:

Perhaps others who've had similar issues and solved them could share their experiences here?
Your pal,
Danny Gregory

I went to the link you provided and downloaded quicktime and itunes and am now able to play the podcast. I was trying to play it in Windows media player and it would not. Thank you!

Hey Danny, just wanted to say thanx for the podcasts. Really interested in knowing what sketchbooks and materials artists out there are using and some of the interviews have already touched on this... cheers. I already have a couple of your books which never really leave the side of my desk for inspiration and I am already looking forward to the next one!

Hi Danny,
I love your podcasts. I listen to them at work and at home. It's encouraging to hear about other creative types, their lives, and how they use their sketchbooks. I read Everyday Matters yesterday and it was so wonderful. The sales lady at Barnes and Noble looked at me funny when I asked about "An Illustrated Life" That's when I found out it isn't coming out until December, I'm looking forward to it.
I hope everything is well with you.

Hi Danny, I've enjoyed your podcasts very much. The questions that you ask are exactly what I'd like to know from artists and their sketchbook methods.
One note: I've had trouble listening to some of your podcasts on the bus or in a coffeeshop, because the volume of your voice is often more muted than the guest... and if I turned it up enough to hear you, the other voice would blow my eardrums!

Hello Danny,
Invaluable and fun. What a wonderful opportunity to hear artists talk about their art and methods. (And about this and that!).
I've listened to the first two interviews and am about to listen to the third.
I have ordered "An Illustrated Life" from Amazon. Well ,I'm on their pre-order list or whatever it's called awaiting the book's December publication which seems a very long way off.
Thank you for the podcasts.

Danny,
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to record your interviews! I am truly enjoying them and can't wait for the book. I'm so glad that you asked Kurt if he watched TV or did other things while he was sketching. My TV just died and I realize that I am used to the constant noise. I wonder if my sketchbooks will change with the silence (or with the superior input of sketching interviews!).
Thank you again!

Danny:
I have very much enjoyed your podcast series, and always look forward to the next installment. I was especially intrigued by your conversation with Kurt Holloman.
A number of years ago I came across two blank journals, each liberally illustrated with his drawings. One is focused on hiking, and the other on bicycling. I bought them just for his illustrations, which I find captivating and very inspiring.
Thank you for the great podcasts!
