Cathy (Kate) Johnson has been an inspiration to me for years with her extraordinary nature journals, her beautiful watercolors and her generous willingness to teach many of us in the EDM community via her informative posts and her many books and articles.
I am honored to have Kate's work in my upcoming book, An Illustrated Life: drawing inspiration from the private sketchbooks of artists, illustrators and designers.
On this week's podcast, I share a chat we had recently about her career, her inspiration, her techniques and the crucial role her various sketchbooks play in her life and her art.
The whole episode is 25 minutes long.
Please stay tuned and consider subscribing via RSS or iTunes* to what I hope will be a weekly or thereabouts feature until the book comes out this Fall.

Really enjoyed this podcast, especially the part where you talk about materials, such as sketchbooks and pens. Do MORE!

Technical Question: I can play the podcasts on my MacBook Pro but when I go to sync my iPod, the poscasts don't transfer over. Everything else does, i.e. music, tv shows, videos. HHHhhhmph!
Do I have a defective Ipod?
(Love these podcasts, Danny!!!)

Hi Danny, I love Cathy's work. Her watercolour is amazing, so is yours.
I have a technical question for you too. In fact I hae been asking around a bit. I illustrated with watercolour and I have problem when the paintings are scanned. May I ask what scanner do you use? I lost a fair bit of details, watercolour effect and tones in the scanned images. Another annoying thing is the near impossibility to get the true colour and natural hue.
Will you please advise me and provide some recommendations and suggestions on scanning watercolour piece.
Thank you so so much.

I've been away all week and the first thing I did on coming home was to listen to this fantastic podcast! I loved hearing Kate's voice and her thoughts on the art and habit of keeping a sketchbook. Though I know a lot about her life, I found out more through your very pertinent questions. I was already so looking forward to having my own copy of the book---I'm even more eager now! The podcasts are a great idea, Danny. It'll be such fun to hear everyone's responses to your questions. You should sell a cd of them to accompany the book! (Maybe you've already planned to do that, and I just overlooked the fact.)

Hi Danny, I love your blog and because you inspire me so much I have something for you over at my blog. : ) It is a blog award. You will see art there, maybe not drawings (I haven't put them up yet) but I love your humor and your gift to inspire. Thank you!

I too have admired Kate's work for a long time. Now I see why she's so good, she's working in her sketchbook all the time, even while grocery shopping! thanks danny for this podcast idea and of course, THE book!

Love the new podcast feature.
Wow Danny...I was just looking back at your new "black and white" sketchbook. It is simply impossible to view your work and not be completely, entirely, drunkenly inspired. Thank you for this!

I listened to kates podcast, and look forward to hearing the others, and your upcoming book. I like this new way to bring the artists closer to us, your art is so inspiring, and to hear it makes it more so, its good to hear what works, tried and true. thanks...look forward to hearing more.
