An Illustrated Life: the Podcast

February 16, 2008

One of the most exciting aspects of working on my upcoming book, "An Illustrated Life: drawing inspiration form the private sketchbooks of artists, illustrators and designers" has been the chance to get in touch with the many artists whose work I have admired and learned from since I began to draw. Each of the fifty contributors to the book have granted me a lengthy interview to include with the pages from their journals and sketchbooks.
Starting this week, I shall be producing a podcast that will share the experiences and musings of each of these artists to whet your appetite for the book to come.
We begin with a lengthy chat with Peter Arkle, a transplanted Scotsman who now lives and works in New York. His sketchbook drawings regularly appear in all sorts of publications and are simple, direct, and often hilarious observations about the world around him. For the last fifteen years or so, he has also intermittently published Peter Arkle News, a personal tabloid full of drawings and adventures.
I urge you to
listen to our conversation ( It's about 37 minutes long -- I think future episodes will be shorter)
and browse his website.
If you find this first podcast promising, please stay tuned and consider subscribing via RSS or iTunes* to what I hope will be a weekly or thereabouts feature until the book comes out this Fall.
Next episode: Cathy Johnson
* If you subscribe via iTunes, in the short term it may take you to a page for my old podcast, Everyday Matters. The feed is the same so just subscribe away and you'll get the new show.

Always great to see what you're up to!

The O'Keeffe book Sounds like a great book to peruse while you sit next a fire with a glass of wine and your brain drifting.

This is an obscure- but true- fact. Georgia O'Keeffe's last name has 3 E's and TWO F's.

Also, thanks for the Macaulay link!

Hi Danny,
I just subscribed to your podcast and am listening to your interview with Peter Arkle right now. Throughout the podcast, I found that your side of the conversation fades in and out and sometimes muted; most of the time, it wasn't possible to hear what you asked and said to Peter. Please fix this?

Also, I want to say that I think the interviews are a brilliant idea to share with your audience the perspectives of each of the contributing artists to your book. I'm only twenty and began sketching again more seriously. It's wonderful to hear how and when artists make their sketches and where they get their inspirations. Thank you very much for your podcast! I look forward to future interviews!

Dear Jane:
Thanks for your comments. We remixed the interview yesterday to fix the problem you described. I hope other listeners don't share your experience and will let me know if they still have this problem. Grrr.
Your pal,
Danny

I love those pages! And as a podcast maven, I'm going to download yours tomorrow morning and catch up on all the haps. I'm really itching to do some major sketching (not major in a formal way, but major in a fun way), and I'm really glad to have heard about your site.
Take care.

Danny,Glad to hear the audio is straightened out. I'll listen again. This is a great idea. I can't wait to get your new book this fall.

hey danny
hope all is well. it's exciting to see you venturing into yet another medium! it's crazy to see how podcasting has exploded into a popular format. they even teach a class on podcasting "as a vehicle for artistic expression" in the art department here at osu. good luck with the endeavor!
best,
morgan

Thanks, Danny! I'll be taking my ipod to school and sharing this with my students. Nothing like hearing it directly from the artists themselves. I'm looking forward to all your podcasts!

What I like most about your work is your willingness to try new approaches, media ect. Your new book is a wonderful idea and I can't wait. The Peter Arkle interview was lovely. Good questions. So happy you talked about media! We all like to know what toys people play with.
I'm looking forward to the next one. I thought the length of time was great btw.
