All together nowJune 16, 2007
When I was in Atlanta, I talked a bit about Sketchcrawls (a group drawing get-together) and had a lot of enthusiastic response. Many people asked me to keep them posted as to when the next one would be . While I have done occasional 'Crawls with a few of my pals, it has been over a year since we had a publicly announced one. so maybe it's high time we had one here in New York. The weather is beautiful now so we have lots of choices for locations. I am also intrigued by the stuff I've seen about the SketchTravel project. It seems a little more professional and clique-y that anything I am interested in but I love that they are auctioning it off for charity. I also like the idea that it travels from draw-er to draw-er — it seems a great excuse for people to get together in person ( I think we are all making a lot of friends through drawing on the Internet but may never actually see our friends in person.) Maybe it would be interesting to create some thing of the kind. Off the top of my head, it could be an exquisite corpse sort of thing wherein person A draws some thing which person B responds to and extends and then person C adds more and so on. Maybe an accordion book with a long extending drawing? Or maybe it's all drawings around a theme that somehow relates to the auction or the cause? Anyway, let me know what you think about either project and whether you'd like to be involved in some sort of collaboration. (If you'd like to take over and put the thing together and just include me somehow, even better!) |

I'd love to be involved. I'll chat to myself over a cuppa tea and report back with any ideas that come to mind.

Danny,
Off the top of my head, how about a sketchbook that travels up Broadway from Bowling Green to Inwood. Or onward toward Canada?
Each artist passes it off at the crosswalk at half hour or hour intervals. Just a flash of an idea. An accordian fold would be great.

oh, yes. sketch travel looks like a very controlled version of 1000journals.com ...
will anybody remember us, once the bigger names embrace the medium?
: )
you know, a bit like this thing: http://detour.moleskinecity.com/index.php/2007/06/03/282/
it is a beautiful and sunny day in brooklyn today.

I love the idea of a traveling sketch book and even more the idea of B responding to what A draws. But could it get messy with too many on one sketch? What is draw-er to draw-er? Does it have to be in person to person or can it be mailed to the next participant?
I know..too many questions. :)
Beautiful in Boston today too.

Hey Danny, We’ve got the sketch crawl groups in Southern California that could unite to do something. Depending on the number of people, we could circulate books during a large group sketch crawl, so the books would even have a location theme. Or do pages, and then combine them into a book (one of our members is also a book artist.)

Danny, I think the idea of a traveling sketchbook is fun, or one that is used by a group of people sequentially.
I personally don't like to work in accordion fold books (since I stand when sketching it's sometimes a bit much for me to juggle if it starts to unfold. But if you end up wanting to use a regular case bound book I'd be happy to donate one of my handbound books for you to use.
Keep me posted.

An exquisite corpse for sketching! What a great idea! I'm in if we can figure out logistics! I got my waterbrushes today, btw...Blick is quick!

What a great idea. I think the concept is a wonderful one. It would be great to get something like that going, maybe through the EMD yahoo group?

This is a fabulous idea - I would love to be involved!
I think there are some really great things happening on the internet. Too many to keep track of these days. It seems like I discover some new group doing something cool everyday - and I just want to get involved somehow.
Great ideas everyone, but Danny's right, we need someone to collect and coordinate. I couldn't even begin to imagine how it can be done, but let's do it! Let's have some fun!

This is a wonderful idea - I'd love to participate - I'd be glad to help coordinate too.

Danny, it sounds like the perfect summer project. I'd like to be involved, also.
I know it is nice outside, but the new Greek and Roman Hall at the Met would be a lovely, cool place to start.

Danny,
I love the idea of a traveling compilation of contributions that continues to grow. I'd love to be involved and will aid in any way that I can!

I'm in with whatever collaborative the group decides on. I've participated in several, coordinated one, some worked wonderfully, others fell apart leaving frustrated participants. Either way I'm making art and that's the goal isn't it? I've had 2 friends who were able to visit the moleskine show that's currently in chelsea. I love the concept of beginning with a central theme and seeing how diverse people respond. I don't know a thing about the exquisite corpse concept but I'm up for working on anything. If we decide to do something that can be divided into parts (communities, themes, mediums etc.) I'll coordinate an aspect...haven't a clue what I'm talking about but I'm trying to say that I'll participate as an individual and am willing to coordinate a component. dana

The National Building Museum has brought the Big Draw from London to Washington D.C. (www.nbm.org) It would be great to have Big Draws coordinated in cities and states across the country.

I would love to be involved. I think the accordion book is a great idea.

Hey Danny - I would love to participate in something like this. I tried to get a "doodle page" going with my daughter (one person starts with something on a page, the other person responds/adds to it, and then it gets passed back and forth until it's filled up). It was looking to be a fun project but then being a tweenager she kind of abandoned me half way thru. I think a book that gets passed around a group would be a blast.

I've gotten so much out of internet friendships that came out of sketching and the EDM group. I think it would be wonderful to have tangible 'contact' with others even if it was only by receiving and mailing on a collaborative sketchbook. I saw something similar somewhere on the internet where the artist did their own page and continued some small part of it onto the next page. There was not theme and the pages didn't inspire the next ones, however each new artist did have to include the remnant on their page left by the preceding artist - even if it was to just paint it out with gesso! It's getting a bit cold here in Coffs Harbour Australia, and getting colder.

What if a book was bound with accordion folds in it, but not able to be folded open until the pages were finished. Then the first person would do their drawing and turn the page and draw something that would extend their drawing onto the next page...a line, a hand, a leg, part of a building, etc...then the next person would have that part of the drawing to incorporate into their drawing and then they would continue by crossing the crease(middle, trench, don't know the technical term)...that way, everyone would have their own individual drawing and then when finished it could be opened up and extended to be displayed in a gallery setting, coffee shop, your wall at home...The size of the book could be any size at that point...just limited by the paper folded, glued, etc to make the length.
Just a thought.

I'd love to join in and be involved, although I'm across the pond. I like the EDM group idea.
