Useful? Should you do it again?
Heck, yeah!! This upside down strategy I tried once before and it does seem to work well, albeit with practice. Maybe it knocks out our preconceptions and puts our eyes in direct contact with our drawing hand instead of being distracted by our minds. Would be very interesting to see how you might work a portrait or two on scratchboard.

Hi Danny. Great video! It would be great to see you using water colours. Thanks, Ger

I really love the idea behind these clips. I think it's very educational and insightful. Keep it up.

Again, I felt I was in a mini class. I am having trouble with the upside-down drawing. I haven't tried it, and I understand the reasoning, but I feel disoriented even when I am watching you do it.

Your visual demos are very helpful.
It's always valuable to observe another artist at work and to hear thier reasons for doing what they do.
I've learned so much from your books and now in just two demos I've learned much more. Visuals are invaluable. Please continue with your presentations. Besides, they're fun to watch! I imagine they're fun to make also. (Or will be more so for you with each one that you make.)
As to the question of subject matter- anything and everything-the world's overflowing. Also, for my part there's lots to be learned with whatever medium you choose to work in .
Thank you for taking the time to share and teach Danny.
Linda
P.S. Your drawing has soul, Mr. Dick does not. Cool sound effects though.

YES - Please do continue these demos. They really are useful to those of us who like to learn by watching. And a watercolor demo would be FANTASTIC! Your portraits and demeanor are lovely. Thanks Danny.

I did enjoy this video but found myself wishing it were a little slower! Is there some way that can be done, without resorting to the hour it took you to draw it? I'd love to see more!---Carol C.

I've really enjoyed your demos, so I hope you'll continue. I work as a freelance graphic artist and the biggest drawback I find is the isolation. I've started surfing other artist's blogs just to remind myself that I'm not alone.
Anyway, it's great to see how someone else approaches their work and very helpful.
Hope you continue and thanks,
Karen

Danny,
I love the demonstrations. I am excited to see you draw upside down, as I do the same thing. I learned this from Betty Edward's book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. It was a tremendous discovery for me, but I thought that it was looked upon as just an exercise. I am so pleased to see you use this technique in your drawing. For me, it keeps things abstract and non-judgemental of my drawings.
Thanks for such a great website. You are a real inspiration.

Danny, This is great. I have been lurking here awhile and am so inspired by your site and your books. Your demo from the other day inspired me to try some upside-down drawing from magazine photographs. I posted one on my blog (http://tamisketch.blogspot.com/) I must say that mine don't really look like the subject but the end results seem to have a lot more personality than those I have done right-side up. I would love to see the photo you are drawing from in your next demo. (I am sure your's bear a much more striking resemblance to the subject matter than mine do!).

Great! Thanks! I love these! I would love to see you do a watercolor one!
Posted by: Debby | March 11, 2007 10:20 PM
I really enjoy the demos, Danny; it feels a little like meeting you in person. Thank-you for sharing. A watercolor version would be delightful.
Posted by: Virginia Hanley | March 12, 2007 12:43 AM
Thanks Danny! Do you have to make it look so easy? Keep them coming please, and I'd also enjoy one in watercolor. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Posted by: Suzanne | March 12, 2007 02:05 AM
As a wanna be artist who really likes your work, I, too, think a slower version would be great. I love the pen and inks, can't get enough, and watercolor would be fantastic. Any medium, in fact, would be interesting in your hands. I vote for lots more video's as long as you keep feeling good about doing them. Norma

That was great, as always Danny. As someone who is only very slowly conquering the fear of drawing in public, I'd really like to see you do one outside if that's possible - I'm also curious as to how you would do that technically!

Danny, these demos are wonderful and a great glimpse into your way of doing things. thank you for affording the time to share with all of us - and... ok! now I want the hour-long version!!! Oh, and one day when you have another spare hour or three, a watercolour one would be great too!!!;o)
Posted by: jules | March 12, 2007 05:13 AM
More please! And I join others who'd like to see watercolours - and outside would be cool, yes. Thanks for this.

Thank you for doing these, Danny. I'm getting a kick out of seeing how you move around the page.

FABULOUS, DANNY!!! LOVE THESE TUTORIALS! Faces still make me shutter to attempt -- so much disappointment in my results -- don't want to insult the one I'm attempting to sketch -- you make it look so easy -- and your work is so encouraging .. I"ll keep at it! THANK YOU!!!
Posted by: lin | March 12, 2007 08:10 AM
I'm fascinated with the demos -- please continue! Slower would be nice, outdoors would be wonderful! Yes to watercolor, and a request for a demo on perspective and drawing buildings and landscapes. Watching you draw is SO helpful.

Danny-loved it! keep em coming! would also love to see you do watercolor!

Danny I learned something from you this morning. I have not tried portraits, they terrify me. I'm more the truck, tractor, ambulance artist. I have Barbara Edwards books but never tried the upside down method.
Thanks to you, I will. I am still very impressed with your book. It's at my elbow and getting a little dog-eared. Thanks for all the good instructions. Jan C. in WV.

Great videos, Danny. I enjoyed them. I particularly liked watching the order in which you did the features and shading. I don't know if it was my Internet connection or not but your lips didn't quite sync up with the sound. I'd also like to see, at the end, the photo that you were drawing from.
Posted by: Kevin | March 12, 2007 11:22 AM
Danny,
I think these demos are fantastic. Please continue them as long as they are fun for you.
A watercolor one would be great.
Posted by: Kate | March 12, 2007 12:31 PM
Amazing - Danny, I've been such a huge fan of your work for quite some time. I love your style, and the demos are fabulous. I definately vote for more! I'd be very interested to see how you capture some of the street scenes - particularly how you capture a scene that changes over the course of trying to capture it in a drawing. That still baffles me.
Thank you for all you continue to do to encourage and inspire!

Outside. Watercolor. More! Go!
Oh, and THANK YOU.

Hi Danny,
Good stuff! Yes, please continue with these demonstrations. They're worth so much. I almost wish you didn't have to do the time lapse function just so I could really follow your lines and techniques closer. I'm currently reading 'the creative license' and am enjoying it immensely.
Thank you.

Continue, continue, continue! These are great fun as well as instructional. Love them! Waiting for more.

Really Great!!! Please, sir, more...
Posted by: John | March 12, 2007 05:19 PM
Wonderful!!! Thank you so much. I would LOVE to see the full length version - or at least something a little slower so I can really follow along as you develop the drawing. Definitely keep doing them!
Posted by: Melinda Bilecki | March 12, 2007 05:38 PM
LOL! I checked in and saw that there was another portrait and got sort of bummed because I thought to myself ... well, there's no way he's going to do ANOTHER lapse time drawing of a portrait because that's got to be complicated and time consuming. OH MAN!!! Did you hear the shriek from here when I saw the "click here to play"? (I scared my cat).
Please please please please please keep doing these lapse time things. For those of us who have minimal opportunity to WATCH others draw and create and work out kinks, these are nothing shore of helpful beyond words. Some of us are way out here feeling like The Lost Tribe that Art Forgot ... I've watched the first one about 3 times and keep learning something new each showing. As for topics? You film. I'll watch.
You rock in technicolour.
Cheers! Mary Ellen

I love watching your videos, Danny. You and your books are an inspiration. Everytime I come into contact with you, whether on the page or on the screen, there is something new and different. Thank you and warm wishes from a sunny Spring morning in the UK.

Yes Danny, Please keep doing it.
I'm teaching the portrait next week in my CE couse and this demo will be referenced to them all.
I had a student last Saturday in my 'Drawing the Urban Landscape' say that she found out about me through yer site. ( when you made a 'very special mention of my site-thank you man!)
Your so FAR REACHING! You are always there for me.
Thought you should know,
Will send some new images later...

Danny, TOTALLY AWESOME!!
I'd like to echo some of the above... Love to see you drawing outside and how the rest of the world interacts. And would also love to see you and Dan Price, maybe draw the same pic?
Rock on, Danny!
Posted by: Sherri | March 14, 2007 12:37 AM
Danny, I think this is awesome to watch how you do your drawings. I'm so new to it, and sometimes I get really frustrated. I just keep on doing it and enjoying it even if it's not exactly as I planned. Thanks for "show and tell" More, more, please!

Thanks for the comment on my blog! I like your videos :-) And love your drawings!

Hi Danny,
This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing your technique and for encouraging others to explore their creativity through drawing. Through your encouragement, you have given a gift to the world. Thank you!

hey I stopped by tonight and wathed the drawing demo. It is amazing how strong the impulse is in you to share the things you love, such a natural teacher. thanks

I am adding my heartfelt praise and see that you have no lack of encouragement from other fans, too...so hope that means you will keep going with these delightful little movies! I, too, look forward to an outdoor demo one of these days. Thanks, Danny, for all the inspiration...you're taking the fear out of portraiture! Also appreciate your nice relaxed presentation style...for those of us who are hundreds of miles away, it's almost like a face to face meeting. Best, Linda

WOW!!! Cheryl sent me over. Your video is GREAT plus you are funny.
Posted by: Linda Davick | March 15, 2007 01:05 AM
great demo! please do more!
could u have a slower version
too? for example, instead of
only compressing 1 hour into 1.5 minutes could u also have
a version where 1 hour
is compressed into 15 minutes?
i think i would learn more, though what u have is pretty
darn good too!
Posted by: rose | March 15, 2007 01:40 AM
I love the videos because I find new inspiration there. Whether you're drawing Dick Cheney or not - lol. And you've got a great, meditative, soothing voice. You should think of doing voice overs.

Woo!
Yet another marvelous success.
Just thought you might like to see the architecture/building drawing I did in the end. Your Searles drawings gave me such confidence and insight. Thanks again.

well, gee, I think they like the videos! I agree. VERY helpful. This one seemed a little to speedy, I'd like a little less time-lapse. I'd LOVE to see you do an outdoor theme, or something from real life--since you didn't show us the photo you were drawing from. And watercolor, yes. And, by the way, why a book of portraits of only men?? Gotta chick portrait book somewhere? Great work Danny. Thanks for you incredible generosity!

Danny, i've taken a long break from drawing for several reasons. i've also totally lost interest in looking at other people's blogs. i decided to check in tonight on this and it's really refreshing to see.
Glad to see you're doing well.
personally, i'd like to see more of these.

SweetHeart! This is SO FANTASTIC! Talk about 'leave them wanting more'!!!! I am so proud of your work and I still can't figure out why I'm so lucky to get to (usually) have more and more of You! I could make a fortune renting out space/time with YOU! I haven't done too successful at being your agent/manager/promop...but maybe Pimp is my calling???? i love You more than any of your fans could possibly love your new films or your books! A natural teacher---uh-ya...do more!!!!ch
