LA Watercolor: a demo

March 20, 2007

A demonstration of how I do a pen, ink, and watercolor painting of an LA landscape. Includes time lapse and extensive commentary. It is long, a little large, and may take a minute or two to download. Please be patient. Maybe do a drawing while you wait.
If you have a problem downloading or watching any of my videos, visit my YouTube channel.

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

I love the comments and of course the clips sliced in through the last third of the movie (which played instantly on my broadband connection, no time to draw while waiting).

Now I'm off to build my Danny Gregory painting robot so I can throw out all my moleskines and pens.

Danny,
This is awesome!!! I have been waiting for you to post a water-color painting in progress since you did the first sketch! Well worth the wait - but you make it look so EASY!!!! Mine turn out like runny blobs!!! Could you do a few more???

Keep smilin'!
Deb

Thank you for defining a "landscape" for me. I, like others, find everyday I pick up my brush and challenge and a hit and miss when it comes to a finished sketch. It was a great opportunity to watch your little landscape evolve and thus am inspired...thank you...but I live in so. calif..was it one of our windy days 'cause I saw no smog!

Danny - I just love your movies, and, well, all your postings. I check your website every so often and find it such an inspiration that you actually DO the work! I often keep coming up with various excuses (will do it later, when everything in my life is on order, etc.) and so end up not drawing as often as I would like. Fun to see how you layered the watercolors, too. Of course, as far as I am concerned, the speed of the movie is not an issue, I could look over your shoulder for the additional 30+ (?) minutes it took to do the painting! Actually, how long does it take you to do a drawing or painting?
Keep painting and know that you have a fan club out there!

Danny,

I adore your sense of humor! I sat at my computer and had a good laugh at the comments across the screen. This is a wonderful demo. I can't thank you enough for posting these demos.

Danny, I like you better than Picasso! Thanks so much for theses videos -- they're SO instructive. We can't draw along side of you, but this is the next best thing.

Whoa. I bet none of your other fans cried when that was over. well, maybe some did. That was the most perfect you i've experienced in weeks. I really don't care what else you do as long as you stay like you are on this film. Sweet, funny, cute, humbly-an-expert, not bossy, respectful and delighted with others, just really a simply nice good person/man, apart from the crap in the rest of our world. Your creation, description, technique, and finished prod. are such a complete inspiration...just to make something. It doesn't have to be big or loud or Picasso. Just You is Just Right. (Can I use that twowel for a minute to dry my eyes?)

Thank you!!!! a very cool demo and just what we've been waiting for. Watching you and listening to you gives me inspiration and courage to try things for myself. (How do you stand the weight of all this adoration!!??) ;O)

ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL!!! HUMOR, LESSONS,MODELING!! BRAVA!!! ENCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soooo inspiring! You make it look so easy. I've always found landscapes hard, but I will take some new ideas away from this.

My only suggestion for the video: I couldn't always read the red scrolling text...

--------
Thanks, Ted. I wasn't entirely happy with the text either and am still working out the details.
Your pal,
Danny

Absolutely amazing - thank you, thank you, thank you! Personally, I've always loved watercolor (that's part of what drew me to your books), however executing a watercolor is *extremely* frustrating for me. This sort of glimpse into your personal technique is absolutely invaluable.

One question - I thought I had read or heard somewhere that you used those liquid watercolors... Dr. Martin's or something? In the video it looked like you had solid watercolors in your tray.

Thank you, again, for your wonderful video!!

-------

I used to sometimes use Doc Martins. Now I mainly stick with Winsor & Newtions.

Your pal,
Danny

hi danny, once again loved the lesson! i have 2 questions: how long did the project take from start to finish and did you wait for layers to dry in between applications?? let me know! thanks cindy
---------
It took an hour or so. And you can see, uninterrupted how I worked, so I guess I sort of did but didn't let it dry.
Your pal,
DOG

Danny,

Once again your demo are fantastic. You know I don't mind the long download at all. It was worth the wait.

Kate

LOVE this--thanks for posting! yay...!

That was wonderful Danny! More please. I'd happily watch this in real time.

Ok... I have to admit I'm developing quite a crush on you, and it sounds like so are quite a few of your other adoring fans. You see, we can't help it, first of all you're soooo soooo talented, you have a fantastic sense of humor, you're a wonderful writer, very kind, human and vulnerable, and you seem like a wonderful husband and a great dad... Plus you're cute! Geeze don't you have a single clone somewhere for me? Oh.. and no disrespect to your lucky wife, she's just the envy of a lot of us...

Greetings! Really excellent work! I love these. I love seeing the process and getting your commentary - especially about how to build a picture, colour mixing and contrasting.

Nearly fell off my chair laughing with the "for a full list of excuses ... " Your screen scrolls are brilliant!.

Really looking forward to the next instalment!
Cheers!

Danny...This was a brilliant idea! I often think that I would learn as much (or more) from observing artists doing their thing and hearing them explain each step along the way. One thing in particular that struck me was that had I been on that balcony and overlooking that scene, I wouldn't have thought it a good subject. When will I ever get out of thinking like that? It's so limiting. I'd love to see more such demos.

This is just so neat. I love watching how you create!

Donna Newbury is huge! She has her own section at Michaels. But, I turned on the same show and found it yawnsville too. Her technique is too kitschy for me.

I loved the scrolling marquee and the humor.

It amazes me that you made a "muted" LA non-scape look so appealing. Here's hoping you're back in NY after the weather that hit us today. Yuck!

Some thoughts as I watched this: 1) Art is really about a way of seeing, isn't it. I liked the watercolor much better than the actual landscape, which was a bit dull. 2) Why do you do this? Other artists charge $$ for a cd lesson this long. Thank you! 3)You've said this in your books, but I realized as I watched this, that you are just generally creative, not just with pen or watercolor. This was a neat little movie!
Again, thanks.

Very clever (in all the best ways) and inspiring. I'd like permission to show it to my wife's students.

Be my guest!

Your pal,
Danny

Yup. Simply awesome. I'm going to watch it a couple more times. Fascinating. thanks so very much for creating this, and I'm WAAY excited for more. Can't wait to see what you and your buds in new york create. Are the 'danny gregory dancers' waiting in the wings? Seriously, THANK YOU for your talent and generous spirit.

So interesting -- I was amazed at how many times you came back and added more dabs of colour to the trees - must try that. And I really liked your commentary at the end -- and the titles! More, please!

Danny, I cant thank you enough for this video. I being and still working at my art self taught and learning from your blog and many other talented artists I cant say enough about what you have just given me with this video. There are not classes in my area and some are to high in price for me to manage on this womens budget. Im just learning about wc and its hard from books. But this has given me such an idea how to start a painting for my journals Im having a hard time not to cry. So Danny Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for doing this and helping all of us in this art journy. I hope and pray you will be doing more of these for people like myself that want to learn but are frustated because we have no place to go.
Youre friend,
Linda

If the "moleskin" journal is what I think it is I'm stunned that the paper didn't buckle when you painted. Is there a moleskin journal with watercolor paper?
Keep the videos coming - they're like having a personal tutor. And I have high speed broadband so it was over faster than I wanted - some of us want these longer! Thanks for your generous, gentle way of giving back to the world.
--------
Yes, Moleskine makes two sizes of watercolor book. You can buy them through the store on this site,
Danny

A fantastic art lesson. Thank you. What are the pens you are using? Do you ever use a wash over the entire paper before sketching and then adding the water color paint?
Georgia

------
Um, I say and provide on screen description of the pens during the video. Kohinoor Rapidographs, .5 and .8
And I have done the whole wash thing but don't much like it.
Thanks for dropping by, more to come.

Your pal,
Danny

This is the type of creation that I like to call "Perfect Imperfection" when I tell people about you. You can tell what it is and you keep looking at it. You win! This is why I got back into art, thanks DG.

Your Pal,
Pat

Danny, I loved this demo! You are too cool. And I am as impressed by your speedy video production as I am by your painting talent. I have been starting to play around with some stop motion timelapse using a still camera, but like the idea of being able to add the voiceover and additional video too. I assume you were using a digital video camera to capture your demo? What software are you using to edit the video, if you wouldnt mind sharing? Thank you so much for sharing these drawing sessions! I was so inpired seeing you 'doing the work' that I sat down and painted another (upside down) portrait!

these are such fun to see, many thanks, and yes, please, more would be great!

Danny, I think you are on the right track with your videos. I have seen the Picasso movies. Smart to take your inspiration from him. Too many of the "making art" shows on tv smack of paint by numbers. They are boring and teach you how to paint the instructor's method of an image of a landscape or flower or cat, rather than technique you can take into the field. I love to watch other artists work and apprenticing is a very honored tradition of teaching art. Bravo to you for bringing it back using this new medium of videocasting!

Danny, another great video. They keep getting better. It's great to see you experimenting with new video techniques -- it's a whole other creative process that we lucky viewers get to watch and learn from.

A minor question -- what kind of waterproof ink are you using in those rapidographs? I remember dimly from architecture school that the standard ink was water soluble, and a wet fingertip could completely eliminate all traces of the ink from mylar. Do you fill those puppies with india ink? acrylic ink? clogging isn't an issue?

I look forward to your next installment!

Thank you indeed for you video. I always learn so much in your blog.
I love this demo!!!
GRAzie from Italy.
Cata.

hello Danny

Brave of you to draw on camera, respect! It's also always a pleasure seeing the process unfold. Would love to go on a sketch crawl with you guys when next I'm in your neighbourhood.

Greetings from South Africa!

Hi Danny!
It's been awhile since I visited your site and I'm so delighted to see your new videos. They played wonderfully. After watching the watercolor video, I went back to watch what must have been your second video, where you mention that you draw upside down...the reasons why are posted on the first video...but I don't see the first video in the lineup. Can you please recap your reasons for why you like to draw the portraits upside down? Hey, how about doing a landscape upside down next time! Thanks for your inspiration, sincerity and humor- it's great to get to know you.
Cheers~
Jodie

wonderful demo. please do more!

Danny,
This video is really a treat. Thanks so much for creating it. It's fun to have you viewing and commenting on the view then making it into a watercolor.
Sharing you creative process is valuable to viewers like me.
Thanks for being so willing to let us learn along with you!
Kate
