I took my journal with me and it became an instant ice breaker. The minute I showed them my journal, the kids came forward in droves. They looked through the pages with wonder and amazement. At one road block, a soldier asked me what I was doing in Burundi. i said working with kids. He said, "What do you mean?" I took out my journal and showed it to him. It was amazing how this tough, soldier carrying an AK 47 suddenly melted and ooohed and aaahed about silly drawing in a journal. He waved me off with a big smile and a come back soon. This year alone I took my journal to Japan, Guam, South Africa, Germany and to the Congo, Burundi, Uganda and Waco Texas. It opened doors and stimulated conversation everywhere I went. From kids in refugee camps to the head of the United Nations in Burundi, it it amazing how they were all connected by this little book. I give you a phone call soon. Trev P.S. I really enjoyed the watercolor tutorial. I'd love to see you have a TV show like the cooking shows they have. Where you show work yourself in a cool studio and have guests like Roz etc. |
