Write Me

Kochalka

February 18, 2007

Last night, Jack, Tom, Butch and I went to the the Giant Robot gallery to see James Kochalka's show. He'd made 150 acrylic 2" by 2" paintings on 3" by 3" paper and they were hung on groups all around the room. James' work is derived from his daily comic journal and his graphic novels and it works very well at this tiny size. It was also a brilliant idea to have so many teeny paintings available at an affordable price. We bought two of them to hang in our bathroom for about the price of a New York dinner.
My pal, Moby, wrote the intro to the big compedium of James' diaries (which I highly recommend) and intrioduced us a few months ago. We have corresponded since and are fans of each other work so it was nice to meet the American Elf in person. Unfortunately, our huge Indian meal left us to exhausted and bloated to make it to James' band's 11:30 PM performance at Cake Shop.
I can't wait to get my paintings in a month or so when the show closes. If you'd like some, check it out and maybe some of the 150 are still available. If not, I urge you to cough up $1.95 per month for a subscription to his online journal.
