Drawing a crowd

October 9, 2006

Tom Kane just came back from several weeks of drawing in the Far East. Everywhere he went, in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and China, he drew big crowds when he drew. People would sit by him for hours, doing play-by-play to each other as they figured out what his lines were representing. When he completed a section, a mumrmur would run through the crowd. Women brought him cups of green tea, men shaded his drawing book.
I think it must be a cultural phenomenon, as we experienced a similar (but lesser) phenomenon when drawing in New York's Chinatown. Tom has begun posting a few of his Asian drawings on his blog and more can be found on his new illustration portfolio site. Check 'em out and see why they caused such a stir on the other side of the world. Then go outside and draw.

i wouldn't let that stop you! as long as the pigeons don't shit on you or your work, it is still great to be out and doing it.

Danny,
Whatever change or rest or lessened expectations you needed, I'm glad you got it. It's great to have you back. I hope our pleasure at receiving notice that you've posted never becomes a burden. You started this party and your creative energy and output will always be the center of it when you're there but it rolls without you too. I am busily painting (still a technophobe so I never post anything) and working on 2 "books" that will have very limited distribution to the few friends who have traveled with me and the family members who have eaten family food with me. It's a creative time in my studio. thanks for creating the place to chat about it. dana

Hello, (first of all - pardon my english :|)
today I ordered your book at Amazon.com, it will probably take several weeks before I receive it but I'm looking forward to it :)
I ordered two, actually, I'm planning on giving one to a friend for Christmas. So your book will travel from Oslo to Bergen, across the southern part of Norway. Hopefully the rumour about your history and books will spread :)
Wishing you all the best,
Linn, Norway.

Danny, What great photos . of a trip to japain. Tom's art work is wonderful no wonder they came in crowds. But th hit of the day for me was the postcard. I'll laugh about this all through my day.
Thanks Danny.
Linda

I live in Hong Kong and regularly draw in public areas (when it is not too hot!)

I also experience many people looking over my shoulder, even putting their heads next to mine.

I don't mind. I am sure, among other things, spectators are fascinated that someone actually has the chance, and the inclination, to spend an hour drawing.

It looks like great fun but nothing compared with my experience of drawing in India. There you have MASSIVE crowds gathering at you making sometimes impossible to draw. There were about 40 or 50 people surrounding me near Jama Masdij in Delhi!
