Coming and goings

April 24, 2006

Everyone's on the move it seems, while I sit here in New York, wringing out the rain. I have consoled myself by reading last week's New Yorker, the Journeys issue. Here are the transitions a few of my friends are going through:

Prashant Miranda, one of my favorite illustrated journalers, has returned to Canada after an extended stay in India. His work in fantastic and I love all of the images he has sent from his travels (you'll probably remember the previous exhibits of his work I've posted). He also strikes me as a wonderful old soul, imbued with gentleness and enthiusiasm for life. Prash now has a blog where you can keep up with his doings and contact him. Please do (he doesn't have a computer or even a phone so be patient if you write him).

Rick and Brenda Beerhorst and their clan are leaving Brooklyn after less than a year to return to their old home town, Grand Rapids, Michigan. They found New York an exciting but very challenging place. I had lunch with them yesterday and sensed the bittersweetness in their journey but also a lot of hope that we will remain friends and in touch. If you don't know their story, read it here. If you don't know their work, please visit their website and wish them well.

Dan Price has been travelling a lot recently. He made a long trip to Mexico and since has been hoboing around the West. Next month, he's heading to Europe on what will be a circumnavigation of the globe. I can't wait to see what he draws out there. If you'd like to share it too, subscribe to his magazine, Moonlight Chronicles.

Ashley Lang is putting together Project Albania so she can head to Eastern Europe and teach local people book arts. If you'd like to learn more about her plans and make a tax-deductible contribution to her efforts, visit her site.

Julie Dermansky wrote us a few weeks ago: Greetings from Phnom Penh-I 'm back in Cambodia's capital after visiting Bangkok. I will return there just before heading back to NYC in the beginning of April. Took a little break from shooting macabre vacation destinations but I'm back to it shortly- off the China to shoot at the Rape of Nanking Museum outside of Shanghai, next. I'll stop at the great wall in Beijing as well and take some tourist shots ... can't resist If you'd like to see some samples, visit her here.
