Write Me

Two Sundays

February 19, 2006

Last Sunday I was the guest on Louden Clear, Jennifer Louden's show on the Martha Stewart Living Network on Sirius 112. It was a great talk, about drawing, meditation, and various aspects of my books and art work. Jennifer was kind enough to send me a recording of the show and I can now share it with you. I have carved the 40 minutes or so of the interview into three MP3 installments, each about 5MBs.
First segment
Second segment
Third segment

This Sunday, I woke up, saw that it was 18 degrees and planned to stay home and read Nicholas Nickleby instead of going to the Central Park Zoo sketchcrawl. I called my pal, Tom, to tell him my changed plans but I gathered from his delayed response that he thought I was a wuss. So I slipped on my silk long johns and the sweater my mum knitted me, filled a Thermos with tea, and packed up my kit.
We arrived a bit late and, not seeing the rest of the group, headed over to draw the Polar bear who was very happily snoozing in the sun. Then we drew the ancient sea lions and ran into the others huddled in the dark of the penguin house; I didn't recognize any one from previous EDM 'Crawls, I think they were mainly people from Enrico's group. It was a little too claustrophobic in there so I just drew one quick bird and we left to go back out into the frigid sunshine. After an hour drawing the skating rink, Tom and I headed back down town.
It was fairly brief 'crawl, just three hours, but in this sort of weather, the time takes double its toll on middle-aged bones. I came home and had a delicious nap to recuperate.

Comments

I have been somewhat distracted for the last 6 months or so, so I may have missed your description of this sketchbook. I am fascinated by the brown paper. Can you tell me more, please, Danny?

To die for sketches - as usual.

BRRR ... 18 degrees .. I'd have wimped out .. but your sketches are glorious, Danny ... so vivid, alive!

Danny, I'm glad you went on the sketchcrawl, because at 18 degrees F. if you hadn't gone I would have thought you were a wuss for sure! And I'm glad you went because your sketches are marvelous. I love the volume you're getting with the addition of white on the toned paper. Loved the central park skating rink too! I feel as if I went along. Thank you. Now I'm going to go listen to those interview segments.

Roz

Great interview Danny...thanks for uploading it so we could hear! We need to always keep hearing these "basics": Just DO it! You are a brave man to have gone out on this frigid day, sunny though it was. Your reward are some wonderful sketches and the company of the other hardy 'crawlers. I hope to join you again in Spring!

Danny, I'm so happy you got a tape of the interview. I just listened to part one and really enjoyed hearing both of you talking together. I took Jennifer's workshop 10(!) years ago when she was promoting her first book " The Women's Comfort Book". Both of you share alot of common ground with encouraging the natural self. Thnaks.
And you showed much intestinal fortitude with even a 3 hour crawl! I bet Roz can relate to cold weather drawing.

Danny, thank you for sharing this interview. I needed to hear that I need to draw for the sake of drawing...not to show it to anyone else, or for what it looks like when I'm finished. Just do it in order to appreciate the world around me. Thank you so much for allowing us to hear that reminder.

Hey Danny,

I like the sketches you did at the zoo. Wish I had heard about it, I would have liked to go. I also enjoyed the interview. Good advice on sketching things in extreme detail like every sesame seed on a bagle to stay focused on drawing.

Best,
Mac

Hi Mac:
I mentioned the crawl a few days ago on my site. Stay posted for future get togethers by signing up for notifications and join our Yahoo! group. If you;d like to get more advice like the bagel thingee, please check out my book.

Your pal,
Danny

I heard your interview on Sirius last week...it was just Great Danny! What a wonderful thing to pass on...the gift of creativity! I enjoyed listening! By the time I got enough courage to call to comment..the show was over.

Thanks again!

In Central PA where I live it was even a little colder than that, but all I could muster up was a brisk walk with my dog! Your drawing of the Wolman rink with the Essex House in the background was really wonderful - what better way to celebrate frigid weather than with a sketch of skaters?!

Thanks for posting the radio interview. I listened with a pad on my keyboard and a pencil in my hand.

Drawing is such a gift.

thanks,

Joy

Love the picture of the park! I recognized it immediately. I spent last weekend in New York and took a picture of the rink. My first visit to New York and so much snow. I'm glad it was snow and not temps like that though. I look forward to listening to the interviews. Thanks!

Look look ! i bought your book.

I finally got around to listening to the interview. Thank you for sharing that with us. I agreed and am living out much of what you discussed!

Great interview. It was also great to hear your voice...(after reading your blog all this time and not sure what I was expecting...) I hope to meet you one day...I live in ny and should make it to a sketchcrawl..no excuses!

An inspiring interview! Thank you to have put it online!
