I am posting this from my room in Rome, still fairly jetlagged but eager to get out there tomorrow and start drawing. Meanwhile, here are some journal pages from the last few days while I
was shooting in Chicago, specifically at an 80-year old institution called the Aragon ballroom.
Most of our days lasted more than 16 hours and we wrapped at 3 am; the effects are visible in my drawings which are actually quite nice and loose though manically, Tom Kanesian in their crosshatched detail.
My colors are a little bolder than usual — I should probably continue to paint in the gloom.
I drew entirely in Sepia ink and watercolors, and many of these entries were doing in semi darkness and while severely sleep deprived. My marginal comments seem even more crabby and distracted than usual.
Ciao! Drawings from Rome to follow...

sooo amazing, even when sleep deprived and crabby ;)
In the 50s, when I was a very tiny babe, I vaguely remember hearing radio broadcasts from the Aragon Ballroom. There was TV by then, of course, but radio was still a big factor in American entertainment. Seeing some pictures of how it may have looked really takes me back (in my mind) to a long-ago era. Thanks for the fascinating travelogue.
It is fabulous to see the progression of your style from the drawings in EDM to these recent ones. Your compositions are so intricate and solid and your colors so lively---really an exciting evolution! Yay you!
Fantastic drawings as usual. I live in the Chicagoland area but I think I was in the hospital when you were here, LOL I've never been to the Aragon but heard about it. Your State Street drawing is fantastic. I used to work downtown on Michigan Ave.
Sounds like the trip wasn't too fun. Hope its better next time if you ever return. Altho being Chicago it might not be (can you tell I'm not a big fan of this place? :-)
