Write Me

Where the hell have I been?

May 16, 2005

It has been far too long since I have had the time and energy and inspiration to write anything here. I'll try and jot down some of the reasons here:
campaignshots.jpg
WORK:
The first wave of my ad campaign broke on national TV last week. Three 60 second spots and two 30s (look for my name on screen in one of them!). We have two additional ones that will go out a bit later.
Our client had a series of big launch events around the country. I attended this one in Wilmington; 2,000 people crammed into a revival tent.
We are also doing a boatload of print advertising: newspaper, magazine, outdoor, etc. for core products as well as new products being launched. We also shot another spot with Matt Badger who does all the Target advertising; it will be on air next month, starting in Atlanta and Denver. We are in the beginning of pre-production on four corporate spots that will be shot here in New York as well as Brazil and some other undetermined location. I'll be shooting those in June. Gak!
BOOKS:
The Creative License is working its way through the Hyperion publishing machine. They devoted two full pages in the catalog to my book; I was pretty proud to be in such august company: Mitch Albom (5 People You Meet in Heaven"), Candace Bushnell (Sex and the City), Caroline Kennedy, Jim Henson, Mike Wallace, etc. I can't wait to share it with you!
Peanut is being published in installments by The Morning News. A new installment appears today, in fact. I am illustrating the book in varying styles, depending on how I feel that week. This week I have used a technique that resembles the printing of old comics. I shared the book with my publisher who feels it would be interesting to treat it like Everyday Matters and The Creative License, a combination of drawings and calligraphy. I am struggling with it, a little, to be honest; one of the prices one pays for developing a distinctive style.
I am working on a new big piece for the New York Times; I'll let you know when that's to appear. Probably in a couple of weeks.
HOME:
We are terribly busy this Spring. Patti has taken on the job of costuming all 80 kids in the 5th Grade production of Annie Get Your Gun — a huge project. Jack has a part in the play too and is in rehearsals every day. He is also drawing an awful lot these days though is on his computer more than I'd like. Joe has recovered from his emasculation and is very robust and chipper these days, He loves to wrestle with other dogs in the dog run; he has invented a dog version of tag that has him running like a mad thing under benches and between people's legs, He's also become quite a tough guy and has gotten into a couple of five second, tooth flashing dogfights. Our family has a new addition: Mohammed the box turtle. He swims around then clatters about on his pile of rocks.
We also have a lot of visitors coming to town. Julie Dermansky just returned from her round-the-world trip with millions of wonderful photos. Trevor Romain is coming to see us soon and Dan Price arrives in early June.
DRAWING:
I have not been doing nearly enough drawing for pleasure. I am at it everyday, working on projects for other people but not enough for me. I am becoming over-professionalized. I am taking today off to make stuff and will probably go to a life class later this morning. Also looking forward to checking out classes at the Educational Alliance. Maybe welding. Or stone carving.
I just acquired a new pen system, the Staedler Mars professional. It has interchangeable cartridges for different widths. The price was good: about $20 for four cartidges and the body. I am still deciding how I like the feel; sort of somewhere between the rapidoliner and a marker. AND...
Look, I'm sure most of you are sick of this blog and it's unreliability. Sometimes, I gush forth; other times I disappear for weeks, only to reappear for some brief self aggrandizing announcement. I agree and have considered chucking the whole thing. As you can see, I hope, I have my fingers in many pots and this is one of them. Sometimes it inspires me and I put a lot into it; other times my attention is demanded elsewhere. Rather than cancel the whole thing, I shall send out an announcement when I post after a longish absence. Let me know if you;d like to be put on my mailing list so you can keep up with my re-appearances. Thanks for your patience. And read Peanut and let me know what you think.
PPS
My new phone has a camera. I love using it as you can see.

Geez, where do i begin...

Please, DO NOT scrap this site. I only discovered it this year. Yes, I miss the constant posting of your drawings, but in the down time, I’ve ventured to your past posts and have finally caught up.

The “over professionalized” comment really hits home with me. I too am suffering the same reality drawing less and less for me yet doing more and more for others…

Just know that there are so many people who are touched by your words and talent. Personally, I look forward to every post no matter how long I need to wait. And even though I prefer your drawings, I’ve grown to love your writing as well.

Stay strong and patient. Nobody expects you to produce all day every day. (although selfishly, it would be nice!!!)

Big Harry from VA.

Well, I'd love to be on the mailing list.

The other day I dumped all of my bookmarks on my work laptop, and kept one - yours. I don't know, just like the personal-professional balance you have established.

Also, last summer I started sketching again, in part because of the inspiration I found through your drawings and word journey.

:)

I always enjoy seeing the email alerting me to the fact that you've updated your blog -- no matter how long between them!
^_~

Please don't even think of giving up your blog! It's a special day when you update, and I'm always happy to wait - I'm sure everyone else will feel the same. Of course we'd love you to update every single day (or even more often!), but you have a life to lead too. And that and your family must always come first.

Peanut is great - makes me smile. Strangely enough my (now grown up) kids call my Mum Ninny too. I think it's Turkish for Grandma, though not sure how it would be spelt in Turkish!

I first found your wonderful blog from a link on Michael Nobbs website... Between the two of you I've been persuaded to take up drawing again after a lapse of around 20 years or so. Not as often as I would like, I have ME/CFS so often lack the required energy. And I do find that drawing is very intense and hence exhausting.

Just came back home from London yesterday, where we managed to get to the "Matisse, his art and his textiles" exhibition at the Royal Academy. It's coming to New York later this year I think - you simply MUST go and see it - some fabulous lithos and drawings as well as luscious paintings. People were so enthralled that complete strangers were striking up conversations and chatting away like old friends. I've never been to an exhibition where that happened before.

Best wishes from dull grey Liverpool,

Maggie

Selfishly, I am voting that you not stop the blog. We'll gladly await your words and art when time and inclination coincide for contributing something to it. As Big Harry noted, there is much to read in the archives.

Bless you.....don't work too, too hard. Hello to Patti and Jack and I really like what you've posted of Peanut so far.

Jane

Isn't life just amazing?? We are going thru similar things as a family; work, school play,(finished on Saturday!), my daughters first art "exhibit" next month, the cats...it is wonderful to be busy but also I miss the down times! But it is a lovely, rewarding kind of busy, where you realize that this is all you ever wanted and that life can be so good. It was nice to have a cup of tea today and read your site!! Take care!

Please don't give up. Everyone can use a feed reader to be informed about your releases, and you have to feel free to write/draw/publish whenever you want -or can-.

As long as you don't feel dissapointed if I don't check your log daily, you shouldn't feel bad either if you dont post every day.

Keep on!

David

I agree with Big Harry H -- don't dump your blog. You're a very good writer, and I'd miss reading you.

I have to agree with Big Harry. I love a post, no matter how long the interim. I admire your ability and struggle to find the balance between work and art.

You're inspiring.

Thanks.

PS - I'm loving the Peanut.

No. Not sick of this blog.

Thank you for doing what you do, when you can. It's very inspiring.

Keep the site running. You are not the the editorial staff of the New York Times, you are a human being. Write when you like to, post when you like to, draw when you like to, post pictures when you feel like it. I think we are all pretty thankful for any activity.
all good.
cheers
-witold

Please don't stop! Enjoying the drawings and the musings since finding your site a few months ago...I've enjoyed Peanut too (I'm mom of two, almost 12 and just over 1)!

I'm interested to know what you think of the Mars Professional. I have been disappointed with it, but I still use it. The pen has a cheap plastic feel. I don't really like the porous fiber nib, either. I prefer flowing ink - fountain pen or rapidograph. I do like the fine line weights.

Wow, please don't hang it up. Your blog serves as a constant reminder to me that I do not have to give up my creative hopes and dreams! I and many others benefit from your talent, your wit, and heck, just the humanity you share with us. I'd love to be on your notification list.
Thanks!!

Please keep posting and keep me on your mailing list! It's better than getting a letter from an old friend everytime I get an email that you've updated your blog. You've inspired me, you've made me think and you've spread the horizons of my world of drawing and creating way beyond their old boundaries.

I'm not even remotely sick of your blog, nor do I consider it unreliable! I always love to see and read your musings whenever they show up.

Please count me as another one of the people out here in the webosphere that has been touched by your words and your talent! You have given us all a gift.

Just another lurker who has been following along in silence so far...

In response to your last paragraph there - please don't be too discouraged about your blog. That's why they come with feeds in the first place. It's true that you don't post as often as some other people, but when you do your posts are always so full of meaning that it makes the waiting worthwhile.

DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP. YOU ARE JUST FINE.
I LOOK FORWARD TO EACH DAY - I FIND SOMETHING YOU HAVE CREATED AND I FEEL GOOD .. .

Actually, the times I check on you and you're not there just make those times when you're back even more fun. HEY, he's back! I've filled time with Trevor (who's always there) but waiting for you is no chore, believe me. Loved today's Peanut. Wish you could share a picture of Ninny and her world. Hang tough, you have way too many fans who 'have your back' whenever your personal creativity needs your attention again. Keep on bloggin'

It seems that some of us who have clandestinely enjoyed your entries, but have never commented, are now surfacing! I can pass on almost all of the other blogs, but I always get a little charge when I see that you've posted a new entry. I don't care at all how often they appear.....but would really miss them if they disappeared altogether. I leave for Germany in 6 days and hope to draw and write each day of a 2-week trip. You are the inspiration, Danny. I hope that telling you that doesn't create a burden of any kind for you. Do what you have to do to keep family and work running smoothly....that's what's most important. If the end is in sight, then thank you so much for sharing a lot of your life with all of us.

Please don't drop the blog. I have gotten so much inspiration from it. I check for a post nearly every day. It's always worth the wait. Don't over-extend yourself. Just post whenever you want. we can wait.

Would love to see some of your son's drawings again. I like to see how he's coming along.

Don't stop your blog. I wouldn't worry about an e-mail list either. I stop by your blog every once in a while - just like my neighborhood coffee shop. If you are in = great = if not, I just take my coffee home. The fact that you are busy and still able to share your wit and wisdom is a valuable role model for the rest of us and a good indication of a busy life. Be happy that you have lots of opportunities - and readers.

Yes - as Miyuki said, that's what RSS feeds are for.

I actually hadn't noticed that you had taken a really long time between posts - since I use a news reader, it's like getting an email from an old friend when you do post.

Don't give up on the blog and never apologize for taking a long time between posts. Just encourage people to subscribe via a news reader...

A journal, whether it is on paper or online, shouldn't be a drag on your energy. It should be a release. It should be something that you do for yourself, even when you have such a fan base as you do. It isn't work, it's fun so if it stops being fun, you should stop.

We all love your stories and graphics so I am sure that we all prepared to wait for when you decide it is fun again. When the notice arrives in my inbox, I know that I am in for a treat so, like everyone else here, I am happy to wait. Take care of yourself and yours first.

What everyone else said. Something is a lot better than nothing! I have greatly enjoyed your blog since I first discovered it, and would be very sad to see it disappear. So please put me on your notification list!
And well done with the Peanut, too. Looking forward to the next installment already.

hihi...please don't stop! i love your blog. I frequently go thru your archives for drawing inspiration and ideas. as a former creative director i know how busy busy can be. just wish i have time to write a book, illustrate AND do all the commercial things you do in your job.

a little bit of danny occasionally is MUCH better than no danny at all. please drop in on this party whenever you're able and moved to do so.
dana

Please, please, please...Danny....any word or picture that you send our way is appreciated.
You are an inspiration beyond your own understanding. What fun it has been to have you
connect with us through the Blog....keep it up when you have the energy and inspiration.

I understand the first flush of inspiration sometimes loses energy as we go along. I find myself in the same state often. Wanting to move on and get done with the past. All of your fans above have expressed similar opinions and we all agree that you "my DEAR Danny" are the One we want!!! Your words and your sketches are supreme.

Your inspiration is there for all of us...your books, your drawings, your ideas...it is obvious that corporate America wants you too...So "Dear one" any words you send our way are appreciated.

Of course keep me on the list...what ever that entails.
Hugs, Carole Joy from Illinois

Saw the ad last night and LOVED It! Felt like I knew so much about it! Thanks!

I love your blog, and check for updates almost daily. Please continue, if you can!

thanks, mary

& don't dump the blog!
draw & post when u can
but most of all
& have fun w/the family you luv

I can't think how you'd spell (howl of anguish sound) - so please don't go :(

E

Kudos to a great ad campaign -- I've seen the commercials and think it's a great direction for the brand. I'm almost your target audience I think, and your marketing message is lot better than the other campaigns for similar brands I'm seeing. (Dont want to be too specific because I dont know to what level you're comfortable discussing, and also dont want to be a huge bore.)

Please don't stop the blog -- sporadic updates are better than none. You inspire me! And please add me to your list to be notified when you post!

becky

reading that last bit - my heart paused and I felt my breath catch - here it comes, he's quitting. sorta felt like you were "breaking up" with us. That probably sounds silly, and maybe a little freakish to you, but I really do enjoy whatever you decide to put forth. I look forward to your posts and am greatly inspired by your work. You do sound like you have spread yourself thin again and if you decide to put this blog to bed I will be thankful for the art you have shared and the places I've gotten to go with you.

Just thought I would let you know that I am insprired by your art. I'm not sure it matters how often you blog, but I find it is very important for an artist to create daily, be that for professional or personal desires. Keep sketching, drawing and painting for th rest of our sakes Danny, you have a great talent.

Ditto -- please don't close your blog down! Just do it when you can. You really are an inspiration!

I'm quite averse to participating to these blogs - it makes me feel like such a groupie.

But to pass my encouragment on with so many others- I would hope you could use this blog as an outlet for personal enrichment. If you're doing it because you feel you have to - please do it when you can. We all enjoy your perspective and artwork. I know it has inspired me to draw and sketch watercolor more. I was pleasantly surprised that others beside myself thought sketching could be a means to expressing art and not just for studio prep. Thanks again,
