After twenty years of using macs, I have finally experienced the ultimate disaster, a massive meltdown of my drive directory. Last night I had to reformat my hard drive, reducing it back to the zeroes. This follows a few days of utter misery trying to save its contents unsuccesfully. I am now working to piece my digital life back together, a huge task that will take a while. Please bear with me in the meanwhile and don't expect too much. I shall return with a fresh perspective and some new entries once this period of mouring is over. Thanks. And please, back yourself up.
Update:
My drive is screwed. I shall be computerless for a couple of weeks. I will try to update this blog from borrowed computers when poss. .....

Oh man, I am soooo sorry. I had a really close call earlier this year and it was just awful. Luckily, I was able to salvage everything in the end and avoid the dreaded reformat. But there were many days of panic inbetween. It had never occurred to me to back up my files before - now it's on the calendar to copy files onto CDs every six months. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery, Danny.

ARGHHH!!! (bangs head on wall in sympathy) .... but then (BING! *lightbulb*) - time for a new Mac maybe??!! You have my deepest sympathy - the MacLurve runs deep and nevermoreso than when one cr@ps out on you and you start browsing websites and seeing what's new (oooh shiny). Good luck!

Doh! In all of my Mac years I have never had a meltdown. In your honor Danny, I just ordered a shiney new Lacie backup drive from amazon. You continue to be an inspiration even in your darkest hour.

If you guys used PCs instead of Macs you would have lots of experience at backing-up files and learning to reformat...just like I had to TWICE in the last month. (sigh) An interesting perspective after I lost much of my data and telephone numbers that went back over 20 years...starting over is liberating! Good Luck Danny. I love your art and your blog.

Noooooooooooooooooo! I cringe at the thought of what you, of all people, may have lost.
Lucky for me the husband just backed up all of my data, without me even having to ask. I knew he was good for something :-)

I am sad for you - hope you can piece together some, well, pieces.
When the same has happened to me, I usually have found that I didn't really miss that much. I do enjoy a fresh start.
I back up sporadically, and always intend to have a nice organized approach "next time." Meaning when I start with a clean computer.

also sorry to hear it. my husband had the same prob last year..after almost 20 years of owning a Mac. not a bad rate compared to pc probs, but it sure is a costly lesson on backing up. it can be quite traumatic to people, but my husband said it was much easier on him than it could've been, because he did his best to let go and take it in stride.
wishing you the best with recovering things!
(possibly try searching for cached pages on google if that might help you.)

This is the consequence of using such reliable machines. We forget too often that we are still using machines and need to back the damn things up. I too lost a hard drive (on my powerbook), but managed to save most of my data, thank God.
Now, however, I seem to have killed my screen. I do not go easy on these things, and blame myself.

Danny, have been following your blog for a while. You've inspired me to sketch again. A couple of weeks ago, I was in Kuala Lumpur, searching for you book. I am determined to get it.
Just wanted to say hi.
