A friend sent this link last week. While individual notes sometimes gave me pause, the overall effect for me was ... sobering. I found myself most touched by comments of love and support back from other countries.

I agree. Maybe I am just jaded by now, but it starts out feeling good, then quickly feels self-serving and I get suspicious of intentions. This is probably more about me than them, but I can't help it. Do you think it's the capitalist in me that urges me to project self-interest or even greed as soon as I see product-choices and loud voices enter the picture of what may very well be dedication to a (good) cause?
Time for therapy i guess...gotta keep all them drug-company-docs in biz!

This is from sorryeverybody.com, at which you apologize to the world on behalf of half of Ameerica that John Kerry didn't win the presidential election. I'm part of the 49% who did vote for Mr. Kerry, but I have absolutely nothing to apologize for.
I find the site presumptious and self-idulgent. Whether or not you like GOP politics, the people who voted to re-elect the Mr. Bush are citizens of the same country, just like me. Their votes count just as mine does. Who are these people to presume that I owe the world an apology? Nobody asked me and if they had, I'd have told them "speak for yourself, one person at a time." And each of those people would still be presumptious and self indulgent.

I loved the site, even though it made me cry-

Please send it!!
The website represents all those that do not support Bush and his supposed "mandate"...
We're all going to hell in a hand basket - might as well go down screaming and kicking!

Well, to be honest, I am not really sure what they are sorry about. I know they are talking about the election, they feel that electing Bush was a mistake. I can certainly understand that, as I have been disappointed with election results myself at times. What is strange is that people seem to be identifying more with the global community that with their own nation. As a nation, we have always stood together, and now, apparently that is not the case. Some would rather side with the rest of the world, seeminly against the United States.

Yes, I agree that siding with the rest of the world that does not support the United States, is not what we should be doing. It all sounds like democrats feeling sorry for themselves. All of this boo-hoo to the rest of the world must have countries like France, Germany, Iran, North Korea, laughing real hard at us.
Who cares what they think.
You could move to one of those countries or to Canada.
God bless our President and the United States of America!!

I'm not an American.
I'm from Israel, a country who is living proof of just how down in the dumps "patriotism" can get you.
If there was a site in israel dedicated to apologising to the Palestinians for our Prime Minister Sharon having ben elected (twice!), I would certinely send my messege out there.
As a citizen of Israel it is *my* responsibility that such things are done. I must have not fought hard enough to change that - to change my country and to change the hearts of the people.
I could see how this site could seem self-indulgent and troubling, but I can also understand fully what leads these people to NEED such an outlet, and I respect that.
Plus, as a member of the world, I feel good seeing those messeges, 'cause I'm really starting to lose my faith in America.
I will not state exactly waht I think about president Bush, as so not to make danny have to earase my reply... :)
But remember this - just because someone has been elected president does not mean you have to stand behind him. If that person is doing things on behalf of your country that you find immoral and insufferable, it is the patriotic thing to do, to stand up and shout, cry, even apologize. It is your duty to be LOUD about it. and what these people are doing is being loud about it.

Hey Sheila
I'm from New Zealand, and we're not laughing at the USA....you say "who cares what they think?" about the rest of the world...which to me, just highlights the ignorance and arrogance of many Americans about the impact your national politics has on the rest of the world...the ENTIRE rest of the world...in case you hadn't noticed, your nation is a dominating super-power...so the whole world was watching the USA elections with baited breath, and not because we WANT the USA to be the centre of the world, but because the elections would have so much sway and influence on how things go GLOBALLY for the next four years...and when I woke up and heard that Bush was in again, I couldn't eat for hours and felt sick for the world...
This is not an American-bashing tirade...I love and respect a lot about American (sub)culture, like Danny's site for example...
I thought the "sorry" web-site was great, because it put human-faces on those statistics of the 48% of people who didn't vote Bush, and it shows the world that many Americans are aware, and do care about America's global authority and impact.
Whew! That turned into a rant...but as someone from a tiny island nation on the opposite side of the globe...I stress that you, as an American citizen cannot underestimate the power your country has.

and another thing...the 'sorry' site is also at times very funny, and I think a bit of humour is important in an situation as depressing as this! :)

Dear Helen,
I agree with you that the 'sorry' site is a constructive way to vent, and serves as a therapy of sorts.
I did not say that you, your wonderful countrymen and most others were laughing at the US, only countries such as France, Germany, Iran, North Korea. These countries are those which cause the United Nations to be a totally ineffective entity when it comes to going after terrorists.
Those countries wanted John Kerry because he would back off on Iraq (read 'terrorists') and those particular countries could then continue their oil for food program.
Your empathy is very much appreciated. Fortunately, we are in good hands. Under Bush, we will go after the terrorists.
Most of American voters did make the Right decision and I can only hope, in time, the global community will see that.

I'm confused. Why is Danny disturbed by the site? What are the "product choices and loud voices"? Why do the republicans posting here think that their objecting to the site is relevant? The whole point of the site is that the people on it think you are wrong. So of course you're not going to like it, and in return, they're not going to care whether you like it or not.

wow.
i knew i was not the only one who was forlorn re the election. i was so disappointed in the country. and i'm not leaving. it's my country wrong or wronger. and i'm gonna scream at all of it when it does the wrong, unholy and bad things!!!i am glad to see that some people realize the impact we as a country and an economic power have on the world. i think we may be headed down a dangerous path. blindly. i hope we all survive it.

Woah, did some one just equate terrorist with Iraq? Dang. I must be missing something.
And woah again, thanks to you guys running after terrorists, other countries have to start tightening their borders and in general making life diffcult for everyone.
Thanks so much.

i was intrigued by the site at first, as an outsider looking in.... then i just found that sorry didn't seem to be the right word to be using.
yes, people feel like shit about the results of the election... but looking at tens of photos with 'sorry world!', the context fades a bit and it just seems a bit pat.
however, the one photograph that still moves me is the one of a husband/wife (brother/sister?), where the male in the photo is in full military uniform.
