A brush with warAugust 5, 2004
In April, 2003, New York Artist Steve Mumford travelled on his own to Iraq and began recording his experiences an impressions in words and in watercolor and ink wash drawings. He had returned several times since, riding on patrol with US troops, visiting ordinary Iraqis, meeting local artists, and venturing into Baghdad, Sader City, Tikrit, Samarra, Baqubah, and other war-torn spots. His images and words are powerful and moving. He is living out a fantasy I have had since the conflict began but unfortunately lacked the balls. Thanks to Jennifer Seymour for this link. |

Danny - thanks so much for sharing Steve Mumford's work. He has managed to say so much with his remarkable line work. No photograph would ever be able to capture the soul of a scene like he has with his paintings. Wow. I think I learned more and felt more emotional about this awful war from his pictures than from all the news coverage I have seen since day one.

I agree with Trevors remarks, thank you for opening this portal I may not have found elsewhere. And what a rare treat to read about and see pictures of Iraqi artists and their work!
You do powerfully good work wherever you may be. It's clear that you have Heart.

Danny I found your book in Edinburgh! I've been meaning to order it to 'pay back' the pleasure I get in reading your blog and have been putting it off as it would be a special order from the US. Serendipitously I found it at www.analoguebooks.co.uk and spoke to the owner who said he'd ordered it because he'd seen some of your illustrations somewhere. I've directed him to your blog.
Oh and the BOOK IS GREAT! I love the fact its a beaufiful object to hold as well as read.
