It seemed a bit weird to assign journaling to students, to make it homework that would be graded. The deeper truth is that I was also anxious about teaching, coming off as some kind of authority on something that I feel I myself am still learning about. And finally, I was intimidated by the idea of all these hotshot designers and art directors making me feel completely inadequate in the visual department. Instead of being a wuss, though, I agreed to give it a go.
There were about fifteen students in my class, folks from all over the world — Thailand, Mexico, Poland, etc. — most on their mid to late twenties. While virtually every woman in the class had kept various kinds of diaries on an and off through out their lives, not a single one of the men had. And even though they were all planning careers as art directors, designers, and photographers, 75% were pretty uncomfortable with drawing.
I'd brought a big bags of books to show them – dan price, dan eldon, richard bell, hannah hinchman, peter beard, sabrina ward harrison, sara midda, muriel foster, tony forster, chris ware,etc. and while they flipped through my trove, I sat with each student to check out the journals they'd been keeping for the past two weeks. Most people used drawings intermittently, yet some hardly wrote anything and filled their pages with doodles and abstract drawings. I think the examples I brought were eye opening and they saw how many different ways there were to keep journals and how rich they could be.
I was surprised to see the quality of the work many of them had on display in the school, beautiful, complex and sophisticated graphic work that was quite different from their comparatively primitive journals. I had the suspicion that they were pretty used to working primarily on computers and simply weren't that fluid with working on paper. Still, though they may have been blowing smoke up my sailor skirt, most claimed that they had really enjoyed the exercise and would keep on journaling. I explained how I thought it would be helpful in developing their creativity, their ideas and their lives.
It was quite cool to be back in school, though briefly. I often have the fantasy of enrolling in an art school, to spend all day learning about making stuff, a stooped greying figure among all the young things.

As a South Florida resident of 33 years sorry you had so much trouble finding the beach. LOL it's so built up here now its like living in a NYC with Palm Trees. Art school trains the artist right out of a person. It took me 20 years to recover. . Loved the pages. . .

Danny...I love the "permanent record", and just called that to mind myself within the past two weeks, when I quit my job (because of an immediate need to become a full-time caregiver to my Mom) WITHOUT the proverbial two weeks notice. My mother (aged 90) is big on the "permanent record", so I didn't tell her I quit like that, and so far, she hasn't even noticed I no longer leave for work (I only worked two days a week). Ah---the uncomplicated mind of old age.

Thanks for sharing the new pictures - I REALLY like how you're doing water with those jewellike glazing layers ... I noticed the water in your Caribbean pictures, too ... excellent ... can't stop looking at 'em. More, please.
A side note ... during my staff years in advertising, I started carrying around an 8.5 x 11 sketchbook and taking it to (long, interminable) meetings. Like you, I was creative management who came from the copy side of the street ... but I found that my headlines got better when I "doodled" art concepts along with them. For some reason the two were hardwired in my brain. As I gave myself permission to "art," some of the ideas jumped into the other side of the gray matter and stirred things up nicely.
A side, side note ... I've had that fantasy of going back to art school too. I live practically spitting distance from Art Center in Calif., toyed with the idea of extension classes or night school. Maybe someday.

I have to say that as a woman --I was somewhat offended that you selected the word 'pussy' to describe how you were feeling. Your journal is a wonderful look at so many things - this was one of your less spectacular entries. I admire you for being willing to be 'out there' with your personal art and writing. I hope this was just a poor choice of words. Please keep up the good work.

danny- what size is the book that you journal in?
i've kept collage, painted, drawn, written journals for a few years now, but i am always interested to see what kind of books other use for it.

Danny...you are a fabulous treat....I loved your "permanent record" drawings in Miami...We were just there last fall and admit it is overwhelmingly everyman/woman's place...hard to enjoy with the traffic, the street people and of course the heat! You captured the essence....
Art School is just a fantasy...you already know it all...don't bother. I have bothered and still long to go back also...recently took a course (last spring) with Peggymcnamara.com at the Field Museum of Chicago where she is the artist in residence and her words echo in my head..."you already know it just do it"....
Keep us thinking Danny....we need YOU!

Bravo for the bravery to stretch. Bet it was worth the effort.
The story and your journal pages were a treat--you captured the tropical feel of the town.
I lived in Miami Beach a while ago and remember seeing the ad school students whiz by on bicycles, carrying giant folios that flapped like sails in the east wind. The work displayed in their school showed ingenuity and I thought that they'd keep moving fast after they left.

To the two people who took offense to Danny's use of the word 'pussy', are you actually saying that Danny can't write what he thinks and feels in his own blog? That he should edit himself for the likes of you two? If you don't like what he writes, that's your problem, not his. And get over it! He was being self-deprecating, that's all. He could very well have been referring to a cat's tendency to get spooked. Interesting that both of you took his remark to be sexist. His post was great, as usual, and that's what you should take away with you.

Years ago the word "pussy" was used like the word "wussy" is today. Unfortunately, porn has altered the meaning nowadays. When Danny used "pussy" in his text I didn't think anything of it because I could tell it wasn't meant to be derogatory to women, but to mean being wimpy about the situation.

Responding to the above comment by finelyspungirl interpreting me as wanting silence or censor DG, I'd direct you to this thought-piece by Lucy Watkins.
It explores how "pussy" only comes to mean "weak or inferior man" when it is accepted that women are both bodily reducible to genitalia and inferior to men.
Hence my "surprise" mentioned above -- and mega-THANKS at the change.

Just to let you know I teach Design Communication at Houston Community College and your book was discussed and I used the projector wired to my computer to share your website and art with my class. They were inspired but it's true, guys don't like to journal as much as girls. It must be that macho thing or something.
