I see my attempts to dissuade Jack from his focus by pretending drummers are uncool has met with a fair amount of objection from readers.
My point was twofold: a) that dads and other authority figures will do many things to steer us away from our passions and b) that the hard job of learning a new skill can be made harder if the training is too academic, too intellectual, too left brain. My comments were really aimed at people having difficulty learning to draw.
I'm not sure how this breakdown in communication occurred and I am launching a bipartisan investigation to get to the bottom of this, pronto.

Your insightful words reminded me of a wonderful taoist saying that goes something like this:
The color wheel blinds one's eyes;
The musical scale deafens one's ears;
The five tastes ruin one's palate...
Precious things lead one astray.
Thank you.

Having a 6th grade son who also has fallen in love with drums, I feel your pain. But there is the full spectrum of drumming: percussion. Last week we saw a wonderful concert by Katia and Marielle Labeque, which was heavily jazz/modern with incredible percussion. There was one drum set - but a myriad of other percussive instruments.
In the concert here, we had percussionist Marque Gilmore, instead of Julio Barreto. Definitely lots more than just drumming!

I understood the point, but really like the part about how parents feel when their kid does something they can't....but would really like to be able to do. Hopefully, as my 13 year old walks around with a sketch pad to draw her "manga" figures, I have inspired her to try and try, regardless of what others do/say about it.

Your post made me pull some blank white sheets from the printer tray and start doodling, then drawing. Of course they're rubbish. And probably always will be. But it got me started. Thank you.
